Alice Katsumi Eguchi

The AKKA are saddened to announce the passing of Sensei Alice Katsumi Eguchi, 5th Dan. Alice was born August 2, 1937, in Oakland California. Passed in San Francisco December 2nd, 2024, at the age of 87. Alice first started studying karate and in the early 1960’s at San Francisco’s first School of Oyama dojo under the guidance of Hanshi Don Buck who later became her employer of 38+ years and dearest friend. She later studied under founder, Mas Oyama.

Sensei Alice took on the role of association secretary for the AAU and Northern California schools coordinating events, tournaments, insurance and rankings as well as becoming a well-respected and accomplished teacher to hundreds of students. She was beloved by her pupils and highly sought after to attend rankings and provide guidance and criticism well into her 80’s. Even with failing eyesight, Sensei Alice could spot a foot out of place by ½-inch while judging kata.

In her younger years, Sensei Alice also bested Olympic men’s powerlifting records in the 100-pound class.

Sensei Alice made a huge impact on the lives of so many students and touched so many lives. Her legacy will continue through our teachings and the memories we share about her.
